Why Standardized Testing Should Be Banned
As early as the 1920s, standardized tests were being used by schools to judge students based on whether or not they were going to be successful in life or if they were “slow children.” Fast forward to the present day, and not much has changed. Standardized tests are not an accurate representation of a student’s abilities and they lack reliability. Therefore, standardized testing should be formally put to an end.
The SAT and the ACT play a huge role when it comes to determining college admissions and who will get into certain UC’s. Most students spend a good amount of their time in high school preparing for these standardized tests, which puts an immense amount of pressure on students because they must somehow showcase all of their academic abilities into a 3 hour and 50-minute test.
Students aren’t able to show their critical thinking, creativity, motivation, resilience, leadership, and many other useful abilities on these tests. Yes, students can demonstrate these skills in other ways on their college applications, but, if a student doesn’t have a high SAT or ACT score, these other skills may not be enough for some colleges. This is unfair because some students just aren’t great test-takers, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have other impressive abilities.
Standardized tests can take a toll on educators as well, considering that these standardized tests are also a representation of how well the schools and educators are doing their job. Standardized tests are no longer being used to help teachers improve their instruction or what they teach, but instead, it’s used to hold the educators accountable to meet certain curriculum.
College Board recently announced that their SAT and PSAT exams are going to be put to a halt because of the coronavirus. Due to the SAT and the ACT being canceled this year, the University of California has suspended ACT/SAT requirements for the applicants of 2021.
However, the dropping of these standardized tests for the upcoming year doesn’t mean that this will be a permanent change. If UC’s are able to stop these exams from being a requirement temporarily, then why not continue this permanently?
Standardized testing is also a social inequality issue. Students that come from high-income families have a better chance of scoring well on standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT than students who come from low-income families. Socioeconomically privileged students can boost their test results with expensive prep courses, whereas students from underrepresented socioeconomic classes don’t have that benefit.
Standardized testing should be put to an official end. It’s an unreliable measurement of students’ and educators’ performances as well as a socio-economic inequality issue.

I don’t agree Standardized testing should be banned as a whole, however I do agree that Standardized tests do not give an accurate representation of a Students potential later in their education and beyond that as well. Thank you for this article.

Tests should be eliminated from school’s so kids can learn healthier experiences.

I would like to know how standardized testing is an unreliable.

I like this article. I do wonder though. In one paragraph it says that the tests are not an accurate representation and lack reliability. I would like to know why this is. It does not specifically say and that drives me nuts! Other than that it was good, a little short, but good.

I would say they meant that students when taking these standardized tests can be in varying different scenarios when taking these tests and different results can come from it. Say if a student who knows the content just as much as the highest scoring student in the class does but they suffer from extreme test anxiety, that could cause their results to be different from the other student. This could account for multiple different scenarios.

I disagree with this paper, and I don’t think that the second to last paragraph in this articular is valid in the 21st century. People that come from a “lesser family” have many opportunities when it comes to improving their testing ability. Places like AP Central and ACT Academy are very good paces to go to find practice test for the SAT and ACT, and the best part is, they are FREE. If you have access to a computer, which everyone that lives in America does, then you can spend time on these courses and learn all you need to know to get an above average score on both of the college entry exams. Also, places like Khan Academy have very good study courses that will allow you to learn more then your teacher will be ale to teach you in a year, and you get to work at your own pace. Yet again, all of the sights I have mentioned in this depute are free as long ad you can access a computer. I hope that anyone reading this article takes my advice and goes to these websites to practice your tests and help learn some of the tings your teachers haven’t taught you in this virtual time.

It should be abolished!! The reason it is still around, is the money that is made with this, and the lobbyists behind this are not going to roll over and just give up 5he money making machine.
Students should always be admitted on their merits. We can only hope that more people understand that it’s only about the money, not our children!!!!

OMG! Thank you sooooo much. I had to write an argumentative essay in 6th grade and I choose getting rid of Standardized testing and your website that showed up was the only helpful one that came from an actual student. Congrats! You’re being quoted in my essay! Don’t worry! A quarter of the grade for this is about how well you used in text citations and no plagiarizing, and i’m in the advanced class so i kinda have to do that or else. Thank you so much again! I hope someone sees this!

Ooh, I like this. The SAT and PSAT should be banned, but for a different reason, cheating. People cheat, and when it comes to a test like this, it should be banned because we have no clue if people are cheating these tests, or not.

I think many high schoolers agree with how standardized testing should be banned. I think this is something that many students feel but there hasn’t really been as much attention brought to it. Good job overall!
