On January 17th, Mac Miller released his last album for his fans, despite the fact that he wasn’t there to listen to the music nor see his fan’s reactions.
The 26-year-old rapper, who was originally from Pittsburgh, started his music career by creating mixtapes that helped propel him into the music world. His fourth mixtape K.I.D.S. was released on August 13, 2010, and gained more than 1 million downloads and more than 1.5 million streams on Datpiff.
On September 7, 2018, all the success and happiness he brought to fans would come to an abrupt end. An autopsy was performed and it was determined that Miller died from mixed drug toxicity.
Fans flocked to social media to express their love for the late rapper. Other music artists dedicated posts to him. Most notably Miller’s ex-girlfriend, Ariana Grande, was propelled into the spotlight, expected to release a statement. She posted a photo and video dedicated to Miller, and on her album ‘thank u, next’ she mentions him multiple times throughout the album.
Fans believed that Miller’s astonishing career and legacy was over after his death. But everyone was surprised on January 8, 2020, when the inactive Mac Miller Instagram account released a post with a paragraph explaining why Miller’s family was releasing the album. The caption simply stated, ‘Circles. January 17.’
The album consists of 12 songs and was produced by Jon Brion. Some of the songs are covers such as ‘Everybody’ which is a cover of Arthur Lee’s ‘Everybody’s Gotta Live’.
The single ‘Good News’ was released in anticipation of ‘Circles’. This song is very fitting to help commemorate Miller’s life. Including lyrics such as “A lot of things I regret, but I just say I forget / Why can’t it just be easy? / Why does everybody need me to stay? / Oh, I hate the feeling / When you’re high but you’re underneath the ceiling.” The music was also accompanied by music videos that show pictures and graphics of Miller and his life. This song was the perfect way to reignite the love and serenity thatMiller made his fans feel.
This album has a melancholy, almost psychedelic melody to most of the songs. Fans have made the connection between Miller’s prior album ‘Swimming’ and this album, Coining the term ‘Swimming in Circles’.
This album was a perfect way to gain closure. The way the lyrics and music come together is like Miller’s way of saying goodbye to his fans and the music industry. Fans and music lovers can listen to the album and critique it for all its imperfections but at the end of the day, this album was a true reflection of who Miller was.
