With a name like Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the 17 year old singer/songwriter has carved her own path in the future of pop culture.

Daughter of small-time actors and singers, the teen was born on December 18, 2001, and released her first single Ocean Eyes on Soundcloud in 2015. Produced by her brother, Finneas O’Connell, Eilish’s debut single went viral–fast. Much to the utter shock of both siblings.

“When ocean eyes came out I remember a couple days–like a day after it came out it got like a thousand plays like on SoundCloud it’s just like ‘one thousand plays’ and I thought that was like the craziest thing,” Billie Eilish in Musician on Musician Rolling Stones.

With the help of her brother, Eilish released her critically acclaimed EP Don’t Smile At Me. Ultimately releasing her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? on March 29, 2019. Marking her success, Eilish was the first female artist to have all (14) songs make it to the Billboards Top 100 list. A unique blend of soft vocals and nightmarish visual imagery that permeates the album, Eilish has managed to generate a massive following.

Still so young, it comes as no surprise that Eilish has encountered her own set of troubles while on tour. Having been vocal about her Tourettes syndrome, Eilish also frequently shares her own struggle with depression and anxiety.

“There was a period where I was like, “Do I even enjoy music?” It just felt like so much touring. And I don’t mean the shows. The shows are always my favorite part. But it was just traveling and being alone all the time, on a cold bus in Europe, horrible food, and when you come back, everyone’s kind of moved on from you. This last tour I went on was the first I’ve ever enjoyed. I feel like I have this amazing thing that now I actually see,” Billie Eilish in Musician on Musician Rolling Stones.

Despite all that, Eilish seems eager to go back on the road. Before her 2019 world tour could even finish she had already announced her plans for another world tour kicking off March of 2020. With bright green hair, large baggy clothing, and chains wrapped around her neck Elish has not only breached the top of the charts but her unique fashion sense has also made its way into popular culture.

Billie Eilish in Vouge Australia

“What I like about, just dressing like, 800 sizes bigger than I am…is it kind of gives nobody the opportunity to judge what your body looks like. I don’t want to give anyone the excuse of judging,” Billie Eilish in an interview with Vogue Australia.

Today it’s hard to find an artist who isn’t 20 years older than young listeners. It’s invigorating to see that teenagers like Billie Eilish have begun to rise to fame. Each of her songs follows a different dreamscape that is bound to leave listeners wanting to hear more. A suggestion; go check her out, you won’t regret that you did.
