I Want to Hear an American Poem
June 5, 2017
I want to hear an American poem
Give me an American poem,
something deep, something real,
Something that’ll really let people know the deal!
I wanna hear an American poem,
Something to let them know,
How it feels to be woken up to police sirens,
Automatically knowing that someone caught a body,
And someone two shots to the head!
Something like…
How it is to walk past “the boys with the badge”
and the yellow tape, knowing that’s someone you know
I wanna hear an American poem,
Something like..
how it feels to go in and out of depression,
how it feels to be around the wrong crowds
Becoming under the influence day and night ,
just to get past the feelings, emotions,
and just all the drama.
I wanna hear an American poem
Something American like..
how it feels to be judged based off the way you act,
the way you dress, the way you are,
How it feels to act “ okay “ just to keep up yo wall
I wanna hear something like
how it feels to move house to house,
all cos your own family doesn’t “want” you
Something like..
How it feels to be stuck in this fcked up foster system
something like..
How it feels to be emotionally and physically damaged
cos’ a 37 year old man decided to undefine a 7 year little girl.
Give me an American poem,
Something like..
How it feels to seek help, but everywhere you look
there’s no support, no love, no nothing
Something like…
How it feels to be treated like the “black sheep of the family”
Or how it feels to be looked down on and talked about constantly
Something like,
How it feels to deceive yourself, giving up on life
digging yourself a deeper hole,
Cos there’s no hope.
I want to hear a real American poem
Something American, something like
How it feels to keep pushing forwards,
but something or someone always pushing you two steps back
How it is to be in the inside looking out,
never able to explain your typa situation.
Sorry but my bad if I don’t want to hear about
How America is perfect and happy
Or how America is
All smiles while the only person that was there for you is
fighting on trial, for a crime that he didn’t commit
I guess it’s just me, but I want to hear an American poem
An American poem, something inspirational
something to give hope to those in the dark
Something to lift up those that are messed up in the head
Something to tell the youngins, that “this ain’t the life for them”
Something to let the “judgementals” know that we ain’t got it like them
Something to help keep pushing forward, with a reminder “DON’T stop, WON’T stop”
Give me an American poem
Something to let people know
that not everyone lives a happy perfect life
Not everyone reaches their dreams,
Due to their surroundings or the shit they go through.
Give me an American poem
Something real!, Something deep!
you feel me?
Ula, you already know I love your poem. You’re very clear and bold with what you say and that just makes this piece stand out greatly.
